Big Money, Lawsuit Verdicts
Xerox Corporation paid $12 million to settle a class action case brought by African-American sales representatives for discrimination in territory assignments, quotas and compensation.
Pyramid Breweries in Sacramento, Berkeley and Walnut Creek agreed to pay $1.3 million because they did not allow employees adequate rest and meal breaks.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has agreed to pay $11 million to settle a class-action lawsuit brought on behalf of 97,000 current and former workers in Iowa over allegations that they were forced to skip breaks or work off the clock. The lawsuit, filed in 2001, claimed the company failed to compensate workers for off-the-clock work and overtime, altered employee time records and prevented employees from taking lunch and rest breaks.
A San Diego Children's Hospital agreed to pay $2.7 million to 150 former employees denied meal breaks.
